GameStop Orders Employees to Stay Open, Says Their Stores Are Essential Retail

GameStop asks employees to keep their stores open during a coronavirus pandemic. As more and more companies close their doors in North America, GameStop believes that its services are very beneficial to the community. Residents are instructed to stay indoors and only visit grocery stores, pharmacies, medical facilities and takeaway restaurants, and to take short walks in the area. The purchase of video games and the answers to questions about a club card are not on this list, so the company is generally unaware of state laws.

A message was sent to all GameStop headquarters staff requesting them to stay open. When law enforcement closes a store, employees must provide the number of the company’s headquarters. This contradicts the established protocol of social distance and many criticise the fact that the company remains open in these difficult times. Since the setback, GameStop has issued a statement describing their actions and has even doubled them. You can read it below.

Although GameStop is best known as a supplier of games and home entertainment systems, we also offer a wide range of products and devices that are important to facilitate remote working, distance learning and virtual connection. As millions of Americans face unprecedented challenges in adapting to virtual learning, working and interaction, there is a great need for technological solutions, and we are one of the many providers of these products that are still open today.

Schools, businesses and families are now suddenly dependent on technology to make a connection. Although many companies and organizations are much larger than ours, we believe we can have a positive impact in these very difficult times. The health and safety of our employees and customers is of the utmost importance and we take and will take all precautionary measures in accordance with the DCC policy. We abide by all the regulations of the state, the province, the city and the municipality and will continue to adapt to all future developments.

The wording of the request is very different from that of the GameStop staff, although the message is almost the same. Over the past decade, the company has seen a steady decline in sales, as more and more people buy games online. However, GameStop is a great place to buy used games and consoles at reasonable prices. As the coronavirus continues to spread, the company could incur further losses and be forced to close certain sites permanently.

GameStop’s reaction to the Corona virus wasn’t smooth. The company promised to provide the stores with cleaning products to ensure the safety of employees and customers. However, they have not yet kept that promise and have instructed companies to take matters into their own hands. In fact, the employees are not very satisfied with their current situation. According to an anonymous employee, they basically said they don’t obey law enforcement in a state that shuts down a non-essential retailer because they think we provide the necessary service to people shopping at a video game store.

Video games will be one of the ways to help people during the coronavirus pandemic. Entertainment is important at this stage of the game, but GameStop can do much better. They may let employees work, but they take orders over the phone and provide service to customers via Drive Service. So far, this seems a normal activity for a company. The vice squad was the first to report a response to the GameStop Coronavirus.
